Āstīka praises snake sacrifice

 āstīka uvāca

somasya yajño varuṇasya yajñaḥ

prajāpateryajña āsītprayāgo

tathā yajño ̍yaṁ tava bhāratārgrya

pārikṣita svasti no ̍stu priyebhyaḥ

Āstīka said: O son of Parīkṣit! O best of Bharata race! Soma, Varuṇa, Prajāpati performed sacrifices at Prayāga in the days of yore, but your sacrifice, is in no way inferior to them. Blessing be upon those who are dear to us!

śakrasya yajñaḥ śatasaṁkhya ukta-

stathāparaṁ tulyasaṁkhyaṁ śataṁ vai

tathā yajño ̍yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya

pārikṣita avasti no ̍stu priyebhyaḥ


O son of Parīkṣit! O  best of Bharata race! Indra performed 100 sacrifices, but your sacrifice is fully equal to his sacrifices! Blessings be upon those who are dear to us!


yamasya yajño harimedhasaśca

yathā yajño rantidevasya rājasya rājñaḥ

tathā yajño ̍yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya

pārikṣita svasti no ̍stu priyebhyaḥ 


O son of Parīkṣit! O best of Bharata race! Your this sacrifice is like sacrifices of Yama, Harimedha, king Rantideva. Blessings be upon those who are dear to us!


gayasya yajñaḥ śaśabindośca rājño

Yajñastha vaiśravaṇasya rājñaḥ 

tathā yajño ̍yaṁ tava bhāratāgrrya

pārikṣita svasti no ̍sti no ̍stu priyebhyaḥ

O son of Parīkṣit! O best of Bharata race! Your this sacrifice is like sacrifices of Gaya, king Śaśabindu and king Vaiśrāvaṇa. Blessings be upon those who are dear to us!

nṛgasya yajñastvajamīḍhasya cāsī-

dyathādyajño dāśaratheśca rājñaḥ

tathā yajño ̍yaṁ tava bhāratāgrrya

pārikṣita svasti no ̍sti no ̍stu priyebhyaḥ


O son of Parīkṣit! O best of Bharata race! Your this sacrifice is like sacrifices of Nṛga, Ajamīḍha and Rāma, son of Daśaratha. Blessings be upon those who are dear to us!


yajñaḥ śruto divi devasya sūno-

ryudhiṣṭhirasyājamīḍasya rājñaḥ

yathā yajño ̍yaṁ tava bhāratāgrrya

pārikṣita svasti no ̍sti no ̍stu priyebhyaḥ


O son of Parīkṣit! O best of Bharata race! Your this sacrifice is like sacrifices of king Yudhiṣṭhira, son of a deity and descendant of Ajamīḍha race, famous even in heavens!Blessings be upon those who are dear to us!


kṛṣṇasya yajñaḥ satyavatyāḥ sutasya

svayaṁ ca karma pracakāra yatnaḥ

tathā yajño ̍yaṁ tava bhāratāgrrya

pārikṣita svasti no ̍sti no ̍stu priyebhyaḥ


O son of Parīkṣit! O best of Bharata race! Your this sacrifice is like sacrifices of Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, son of Satyavatī, in which he himself acted as the chief priest. Blessings be upon those who are dear to us!


ime ca te sūryasamānavarcasaḥ

samāsate vṛtrahaṇaḥ kratuṁ yathā

naiṣāṁ jñātaṁ vidyate jñānamadya

dattaṁ yebhyo na praṇaśyetkadācit


These learned men, who are sitting here, are as effulgent as sun and they make your this sacrifice of the slayer of Vṛtra - Indra. There is nothing for them to know and gifts made to them become inexaustible.


ṛtviksamo nāsti lokeṣu caiva

dvaipāyaneneti viniścitaṁ me

etasya śiṣyā hi kṣitiṁ saṁcaranti

sarvartvijaḥ karmasu sveṣu dīkṣāḥ


There is not a Ṛtvija in all the worlds equal to your Ṛtvija Dvaipāyana. His disciples, being Ṛtvijas, competent in their duties, travel over the world.


vibhāvasuścitrabhānurmahātmā
hiraṇyaretā hutabhūkkṛṣṇavartmā
pradakṣiṇāvartaśikhaḥ pradīpto
havyaṁ tavedaṁ hutabhugvaṣṭi devaḥ

Noble bearer of libations, Vibhāvasu and Citrabānu - Fire, having gold for his vital seed and black smokes on its way, carries these your libations of ghee to celestials.

neha tvadanyo vidyate jīvaloke

samo nṛpaḥ pālayitā prajānām

dhṛtyā ca te prītamanaḥ sadāhaṁ

tvaṁ vā varuṇo dharmarājo yamo vā


There is no other king in this world equal to you in protecting his subjects. I am well pleased with your courage. You are either Varuṇa, Yama or Dharmarāja.


śakraḥ sākṣādvagrapāṇiryatheha

trātā loke ̍smiṁstvaṁ tatheha prajānām

matastvaṁ naḥ puruṣendreha loke

na ca tvadanyo bhūtirasti jajñe


You are protector of all creatures in this world, like Indra himself, thunderbolt in hand. There is no man in this world so great as you. There is no king who is your equal in sacrifices.

khaṭvāṅganābhāgadilipakalpa

yayātimāṁdhātṛsamaprabhāva

ādityatejaḥ pratimānatejā

bhīṣmo yathā rājasi suvratastvam


You are like Khaṭvāṅga, Nābhāga and Dilīpa. You are like Yayāti and Māṅdhāta in prowess. You are equal to the sun in splendour. Royal sage of excellent vows, you are like Bhīṣma.


vālmīkivatte nibhṛtaṁ svavīrye

vasiṣṭhavatte niyataṭca kopaḥ

prabhutvamindratvasamaṁ mataṁ me

dyutiśca nārāyaṇavadvibhāti


You are like Vālmīki of power concealed. Like Vasiṣṭha you have controlled your anger. Your sovereighty is like that of Indra and your splendour is like that of Nārāyaṇa.


yamo yathā dharmaviniścayajñaḥ

kṛṣṇo yathā satvaguṇopapannaḥ

śriyāṁ nivāso ̍si yathā vasūnāṁ

nidhānabhūto ̍si tathā kratūnām


You are learned in administration of justice like Yama and you are adorned with all qualifications like Kṛṣṇa. You are home of the wealth that belongs to Vasus, you are main spring of all sacrifices.


dadbhodbhavenāsi samo balena

rāmo yathā śāstravidastravicca

aurvatritābhyāmasi tulyatejā

duṣprekṣaṇīyo ̍si bhagīrathena


You are equal to Dambhodbhava in strength, you are learned both, in Śāstras and arms like Paraśurāma. You are equal to Aurava and Trita in strength. You inspire terror with your looks like Bhagīratha.


sautiruvāca

evaṁ stutāḥ sarva eva prasannā

rājā sadasyā ṛtvijo havyavāhaḥ

teṣāṁ dṛṣṭvā bhāvitānīṅgitāni

provāca rājā janamejayo ̍tha


Sauti said: Having thus adored them, Āstīka gratified and pleased them all, king, Sadasyas, Ṛtvijas and sacrificial fire. King Janamejaya, seeing signs and indications manifested on all sides, addressed them thus:
