sautiruvāca
gatamātraṁ tu jaratkāruravedayat
bhrātuḥ sakāśamāgatya yāthātathyaṁ tapodhana
Sauti said: O ascetic Ṛṣi, as soon as her husband was gone, Jaratkāru went to her brother and told him all that had happened.
tataḥ sa bhujagaśreṣṭhaḥ śrutvā sumahadapriyam
uvāca bhaginīṁ tadā dīnataraḥ svayam
Hearing this greatly evil news, king of the snakes spoke to his miserable sister, he being more miserable than she was.
vāsukiruvāca
jānāsi bhadre yatkāryaṁ pradāne kāraṇaṁ ca yat
pannagānāṁ hitārthāya putraste syāttato yadi
Vāsuki said: O amiable siser! You know the object for which you were bestowed on the Ṛṣi, so that son be born for the good of the race of the snakes.
sa sarpasatrātkila no mokṣayiṣyati vīryavān
evaṁ pitāmahaḥ pūrvamuktavāṁstu suraiḥ saha
That greatly powerful being will be able to save us from the snake sacrifice. Grandsire told this to celestials in olden times.
apyasti garbhaḥ subhage tasmātte munisattamāt
na cecchāmyaphalaṁ tasya dārakarma manīṣiṇaḥ
O fortunate one! Are you quick with child by that best of Ṛṣis? My heart ̍s desire is that my bestowal of you on that wise man may not be fruitless.
kāmaṁ ca mama na nyāyyaṁ praṣṭuṁ tvāṁ kāryamīdṛśam
kiṁ tu kāryagarīyastvāttatastvāhamacūcudam
It is not proper for me sak you such a question, but I ask you from the gravity of the matter.
durvāryatāṁ viditvā ca bhartuste ̍titapasvinaḥ
nainamanvāgamiṣyāmi kadāciddhi śapetsa mām
Knowing that it is not possible to get back your husband, ever engaged in severe asceticism, I shall not follow him, he may curse me.
ācakṣva bhadre bhartuḥ svaṁ sarvameva viceṣṭitam
uddharasva ca śalyaṁ me ghoraṁ hṛdi cirasthitam
O amiable sister! Tell me all that your husband has done and thereby relieve me by drawing out terribly painful dart that is implanted in my heart.
jaratkārustato vākyamityuktvā pratyabhāṣata
āśvāsayantī saṁtaptaṁ vāsukiṁ pannageśvaram
Jaratkāru, having been thus addressed, consoled king of snakes, Vāsuki and spoke thus.
jaratkāruruvāca
pṛṣṭo mayā ̍patyahetoḥ sa mahātmā mahātapāḥ
astītyuttaramuddiśya mamedaṁ gatavāṁśca saḥ
Jaratkāru said: Asked by me about offspring, hing souled great ascetic said: It is there and went away.
svaireṣvapi na tenāhaṁ smarāmi vitathaṁ vacaḥ
uktapūrvaṁ kuto rājansāṁparāye sa vakṣyati
I do not remember him to have spoken a falsehood even in jest. O king! Why should he then speak a falsehood in such a serious matters. He said:
na saṁtāpapastvayā kāryaḥ kāryaṁ prati bhujaṅgame
utpatsyati ca te putro jvalanārkasamaprabhaḥ
O lady of the Nāga race, do not grieve for the result of our union. As son will be born in you like blazing fire.
ityuktvā sa hi māṁ bhrātargato bhartā tapodhanaḥ
tasmādvyetu paraṁ duḥkhaṁ tavedaṁ manasi sthitam
O brother! Having said this, Ṛṣi, my husband, went away therefore, let the great sorrow in your mind be removed.
sautiruvāca
etacchrutvā sa nāgendro vāsukiḥ parayā mudā
evamastviti tadvākyaṁ bhaginyāḥ pratyagṛhṇata
Sauti said: Having heard this, Vāsuki accepted the words of his sister saying: Be it so!
sāntvamānārthadānaiśca pūjayā cānurūpayā
sodaryāṁ pūjayāmāsa svasāraṁ pannagottamaḥ
O Brāhmaṇa! The best of snakes then adored sister with the best regards, with fitting eulogies and gifts of wealth.
tataḥ pravavṛdhe garbho mahātejā mahāprabhaḥ
yathā somo dvijaśreṣṭha śuklapakṣodito divi
O best of twice born! Greatly powerful and effulgent embryo began to develop like moon in white fortnight.
atha kāle tu sā brahmanprajajñe bhujagasvasā
kumāraṁ devagarbhābhaṁ pitṛmātṛbhayāpaham
O Brāhmaṇa! Sister of the snake in due time gave birth to a son with the splendour of celestial boy, destroyer of the fears of relatives of his father and mother.
vavṛdhe sa tu tatraiva nāgarājaniveśane
vedāṁścādhijage sāṅgānbhārgavāccāccyavanānmune
He grew up inthe house of the king of the snakes. H estudied Vedas with their Aṅgas from great Ṛṣi Cyavana, son of Bhṛgu.
cīrṇavrato bāla eva buddhisattvaguṇānvitaḥ
nāma cāsyābhavatkhyātaṁ lokeṣvāstīka ityuta
Though he was a mere boy, his asceticism was great. He was gifted with great intelligence and many virtues. He was known as Āstīka.
astītyuktvā gato yasmātpitā garbhasthameva tam
vanaṁ tasmādidaṁ tasya nāmāstīketi viśrutam
He was known by the name of Āstīka, because his father had gone away to the forest saying: Asti! He is there! When he was in his mother ̍s womb.
sa bāla eva tatrasthaścarannamibuddhimān
gṛhe pannagarājasya prayatnātparirakṣitaḥ
Though he was only a boy, yet he was gtawe and intelligent. He was kept with gret care in the palace of snake king.
bhagavāniva deveśaḥ śūlapāṇirhiraṇmayaḥ
vivardhamānaḥ sarvāstānpannagānabhyaharṣayat
He was like illustrious lord of celestials, Śūlapāṇi - Śiva. He grew up day by day to infinite delight of all snakes.
