Kaśyapa sees Takṣaka
When the 7th day came, the best of Brāhmaṇas, Kaśyapa, was coming with intention of treating king, if bitten by the snake.
śrutaṁ hi tena tadabhūdyathā taṁ rājasattamam
takṣakaḥ pannagaśreṣṭho neṣyate yamasādanam
He had heard all that had happened, he had heard that the best of snakes, Takṣaka would take king to Yama ̍s abode.
taṁ daṣṭaṁ pannagendreṇa kariṣye ̍hamanajvaram
tatra me ̍rthaśca bhaviteti vicintayan
He though: I will cure king bitten by the best of snakes. By this I may gain both wealth and virtue.
taṁ dadarśa sa nāgendrastakṣakaḥ kāśyapaṁ pathi
gacchantamekamanasaṁ dvijo bhūtvā vayotigaḥ
King of the snakes, Takṣaka, saw on the way, Kaśyapa, going with intention of curing king. He appeared before him in the form of an old Brāhmaṇa.
tamabravītpannagendraḥ kāśyapaṁ munipuṅgavam
kva bhavāṁstvarito yāti kiṁ ca kāryaṁ cikīrṣati
Thereupon king of the snakes spoke to the best of Ṛṣis, Kaśyapa, saying: Where are you going with such a speed? What is the business on which you are going?
nṛpaṁ kurukulotpanna parikṣitamarindramam
takṣakaḥ pannagaścaṣṭhastejasā ̍dya pradhakṣyati
Kaśyapa said: Best of the snakes, Takṣaka, will today burn the chastiser of his enemies, king Parīkṣit of Kuru ̍s race.
taṁcdaṣṭaṁ pannagendreṇa tenāgnisamatejasam
pāṇḍavānāṁ kulakaraṁ rājānamamitaujasam
gacchāmi tvaritaṁ saumya sadyaḥ kartumapajvaram
O amiable man, I am going in haste without loss of time, to cure that king of immeasure prowess, sole representative of Kuru race, when he will be bitten by the king of the snakes, who is as powerful as Agni.
takṣaka uvāca
ahaṁ sa takṣako brahmaṁ staṁ dhakṣyāmi mahīpatim
nivartasva na śaktastvaṁ mayā daṣṭaṁ cikitsitum
Takṣaka said: O Brāhmaṇa! I am that very Takṣaka, who will kill that king of the Earth, stop, you cannot cure one who is bitten by me.
kāśyapa uvāca
ahaṁ taṁ nṛpatiṁ tvayā daṣṭamapajvaram
kariṣyāmīti me buddhirvidyābalasamanvitā
Kaśyapa said: I am possessed with the power of learning. Going there, I am sure, I shall cure king bitten by you!
takṣaka uvāca
yadi daṣṭaṁ mayeha tvaṁ śaktaḥ kiṁciccikitsitum
tato vṛkṣaṁ mayā daṣṭamimaṁ jīvaya kāśyapa
Takṣaka said: O Kaśyapa! If you are able to cure any creature bitten by me, then revive this tree bitten by me.
paraṁ mantrabalaṁ yatte taddarśaya yatasva ca
nyagrodhamenaṁ dhakṣyāmi paśyataste dvijottama
O best of Brāhmaṇa! I shall burn this banian tree in your sight. Try your best and show me your skills in Mantras of which you have just spoken.
kāśyapa uvāca
daśa nāgenndra vṛkṣaṁ yadyetadabhimanyase
ahamenaṁ tvayā daṣṭaṁ jīvayiṣye bhujaṅgam
Kaśyapa said: O snake! If you are so minded, bite tree then! I shall revive it, though bitten by you.
sautiruvāca
evamuktaḥ sa nāgendraḥ kāśyapena mahātmanā
adaśadvṛkṣamabhyetya nyagrodhaṁ pannagottamaḥ
Sauti said: King of snakes, thus addressed by Kaśyapa, bit that banian tree.
sa vṛkṣastena daṣṭastu pannagena mahātmanā
āśīviṣopetaḥ prajajvāla samantataḥ
Tree, bitten by illustrious snake and having embibed his poison, blazed up all around.
taṁ dagdhvā sa nagaṁ nāgaḥ kāśyapaṁ punarabravīt
kuru yatnaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha jīvayainaṁ vanaspatim
Having thus burnt the tree, snake spoke again to Kaśyapa: O best of Brāhmaṇas, try your best and let this lord of the forest - banian tree, be revived!
vidyābalaṁ pannagendra paśya me dya vanasptau
ahaṁ saṁjīvayāmyenaṁ paśyataste bhujaṅgama
O king of the snakes, behold my power of learning in this lord of the forest! O snake, I shall revive it in your very presence!
tataḥ sa bhgavānvidvānkāśyapo dvijasattamaḥ
bhasmarāśīkṛtaṁ vṛkṣaṁ vidyayā samajīvayat
And then that best of Brāhmaṇas, illustrious and learned Kaśyapa, revived by his learning the tree, which was reduced to a heap if ashes.
aṅkuraṁ kṛtavāṁstatra tataḥ parṇadvayānvitam
palāśinaṁ śākhinaṁ ca tathā viṭapinaṁ punaḥ
He first created the sprout. Then he created two leaves on it. Then he made the stem, then branches and then full grown tree with leaves and all.
taṁ dṛṣṭvā jīvitaṁ vṛkṣaṁ mahātmanā
uvāca takṣako brahmannaitadatyadbhhutaṁ tvayi
Seeing that the tree was really revived by illustrious Kaśyapa, Takṣaka said: O Brāhmaṇa! It is not at all wonderful!
dvijendra yadviṣaṁ hanyā mama vā madvidhasya vā
kaṁ tvamarthamabhiprepsuryāsi tatra tapodhana
That you destroy my poison or the poison of others like me. O king of Brāhmaṇas, wishing to gain wealth, you are bent to go there?
yattebhilaṣitaṁ prāptuṁ phalaṁ tasmānnṛpottamāt
ahameva pradāsyāmi tatte yadyapi durlabham
I shall give you the wealth you hope to get from the best of kings, however difficult may it be to get it!
vipraṣāpābhibhūte ca kṣīṇāyuṣi narādhipe
ghaṭamānasya te vipra siddhiḥ saṁśayitā bhavet
O Brāhmaṇa! Your success is doubtful, for that king is affected with Brāhmaṇa ̍s curse and the period of his life is also shortened.
tato yaśaḥ pradīptaṁ te triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam
niraṁśuriva dharmāśurantardhānamito vrajet
Your blazing fame, that has overspread 3 worlds, will then disappear as the sun deprived of its splendour!
kaśyapa uvāca
dhanārthī yāmyahaṁ tatra tanme dehi bhujagama
tato ̍haṁ vinivartiṣye svāpateyaṁ pragṛhya vai
Kaśyapa said: I go there for wealth. Give it to me, O snake, so that I may go back receiving it from you!
takṣaka uvāca
yāvaddhanaṁ prārthayase tasmādrājñastato ̍dhikam
ahameva pradāsyāmi nivartasva dvijottama
Takṣaka said: O best of Brāhmaṇas, I shall give you wealth more than you hope to get from the king, therefore, do not go!
sautiruvāca
takṣakasya vacaḥ śrutvā kāśyapo dvijasattamaḥ
praddhyau sumahātejā rājānaṁ prati buddhimān
Sauti said: Having heard what Takṣaka said, the best of Brāhmaṇas, wise and greatly powerful Kaśyapa, sat in meditation.
divyajñānaḥ sa tejasvī jñātvā taṁ nṛpatiṁ tadā
kṣīṇāyuṣaṁ pāṇḍaveyamapāvartata kāśyapaḥ
labdhvā vittaṁ munivarastakṣakāvadīpsitam
nivṛtte kāśyape tasminsamayena mahātmani
Greatly powerful Kaśyapa, ascertaining by his ascetic powers that the period of lifespan of the king of Pāṇḍava race had really run out, went back, after receiving from Takṣaka as much wealth as he desired to posess. On departure of Kaśyapa, Takṣakas went with speed towards Hastinapura.
