tataḥ karma pravavṛte sarpasatravidhānataḥ

paryakrāmaṁśca vidhivatsve sve karmaṇi yājakāḥ

prāvṛtya kṛṣṇavāsāṁsi dhūmasaṁraktalocanāḥ

Sauti said: Snake sacrifice then began in due form. Sacrificial priests, expert in their respective duties according to the ordinance, their bodies with black garments and their eyes red from smoke, poure ghee in blazing fire, uttering Mantras.

kampayantaśca sarveṣāmuragāṇāṁ manāṁsi ca

sarpānājuhuvustatra sarvānagnimukhe tadā

Making the hearts of all the snakes tremble in fear, they began to pour ghee in the mouth of Agni, uttering the names of the snakes.

tataḥ sarpāḥ samāpetuḥ pradīpte havyavāhane

viceṣṭamānāḥ kṛpaṇamāhvayantaḥ parasparam

Thereupon snakes fell into the blazing fire one after another, each be numbered and calling piteously to one another.

visphurantaḥ svasantaśca veṣṭayantaḥ parasparam

pucchaiḥ śirobhiśca bhṛśaṁ citrabhānuṁ prapedire

Breathing hard, swelling to enormous sizes, intwining one another with their heads and tails, they came in large numbers and fell into the blazing fire.

śvetāḥ kṛṣṇāśca nīlāśca sthavirāḥ śiśavastathā

nadanto vividhānnādānpeturdīpte vibhāvasau

krośayojanamātrā hi gokarṇasya pramāṇataḥ

patantyajasravegena vanhāvagnimatāṁvara

White, black, blue, old and young, those measuring a crosa those measuring a Yojana and those measuring a Gokarṇa, all fell violently into that blazing fire uttering various cries.

evaṁ śatasahasrāṇi prayutānyarbudāni ca

avaśāni vinaṣṭāni pannagānāṁ tu tatra vai

Hundreds and thousands, tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands came be numbered and perished on that occasion.

turagā iva tatrānye hastihastā ivāpare

mattāiva ca mātaṅgā mahākāyā mahābalāḥ

Amongst those who perished, there were some who were like horses, some like trunks of elephants and others with huge bodies of mad elephants.

uccāvacāśca bahavo nānāvarṇā viṣolbaṇāḥ

ghorāśca parighaprakhyā dandaśūkā mahābalāḥ

prapeturagnāvuragā mātṛvāgdaṇḍapīḍitāḥ

Snakes of various colours and of virulent poison, of terrible look, like maces furnished with iron spikes, of enormous strength and of greatest biting propensity, fell into the fire as the result of their mother ̍s curse.
