Preparations for Snake sacrifice
sautiruvāca
evamuktvā tataḥ śrīmānmantribhiścānumoditaḥ
āruroha pratijñāṁ sa sarpasatrāya pārthivaḥ
Sauti said: Illustrious king having said so, ministers expressed their approbation. King expressed his determination of performing snake sacrifice.
brahmanbharataśārdūlo rājā pārikṣitastadā
purohitamathāhūya ṛtvijo vasudhādhipaḥ
Lord of the Earth, the best of the Kurus, king Janamejaya, son of Parīkṣit, then called his priest and Ṛtvijas.
abravīdvākyasaṁpannaḥ kāryasaṁpatkaraṁ vacaḥ
yo me hiṁsitavāṁstātaṁ takṣakaḥ sa durātmavān
And that accomplished speaker spoke on accomplishment of his great task. He said: I must avenge on that wretch Takṣaka!
pratikuryāṁ tathā tasya tadbhavanto bruvantu me
api tatkarma viditaṁ bhavatāṁ yena pannagam
takṣakaṁ saṁpratīpte ̍gnau prakṣipeyaṁ sabāndhavam
yathā tena pitā mahyaṁ pūrvaṁ dagdho viṣāgninā
tathā ̍hamapi taṁ pāpaṁ dagdhumicchāmi pannagam
Tell me what I must do! Do you know any act by which I can throw TAkṣaka with all his friends and relatives in the blazing fire? I want to burn the wretch of the sname as he burnt my father with his poison!
ṛtvija ūcuḥ
asti rājanmahatsatraṁ tvadarthaṁ devanirmitam
sarpasatramitikhyātaṁ purāṇe paripaṭhyate
Ṛtvijas said: O king! There is a sacrifice advised by celestials for you! It is known as snake sacrifice and is spoken of in the Purāṇas.
āhartā tasya satrasya tvannānyo ̍sti narādhipa
iti paurāṇikāḥ prāhurasmākaṁ cāsti sa ṛtuḥ
O king! You alone can accomplish it and no one else! Men, learned in Purāṇas, have told us that there is such a sacrifice.
sautiruvāca
evamuktaḥ sa rājarṣirmene dagdhaṁ takṣakam
hutāśanamukhe dīpte praviṣṭamiti sattama
Sauti said: O excellent one! Thus addressed, king thought Takṣaka already thrown into the blazing fire and burnt to ashes.
tato ̍bravīnmantravidastānrājā brāhmaṇāṁstadā
āhariṣyāmi tatsatraṁ saṁbhārāḥ saṁbhriyantu me
King then told these Brāhmaṇas learned in Mantras: I shall perform that sacrifice! Tell me things that are necessary.
tataste ṛtvijastasya śāstrato dvijasattama
taṁ deśaṁ māpayāmāsuryaryajñāyatanakāraṇāt
O best of Brāhmaṇas! Thereupon his wise Ṛtvijas, lealrned in Śāstras, measured, according ot ordinanves, a piece of land for sacrificial platform.
