 sautiruvāca

evamuktvā tataḥ śrīmānmantribhiścānumoditaḥ

āruroha pratijñāṁ sa sarpasatrāya pārthivaḥ

Sauti said: Illustrious king having said so, ministers expressed their approbation. King expressed his determination of performing snake sacrifice.

brahmanbharataśārdūlo rājā pārikṣitastadā

purohitamathāhūya ṛtvijo vasudhādhipaḥ

Lord of the Earth, the best of the Kurus, king Janamejaya, son of Parīkṣit, then called his priest and Ṛtvijas.

abravīdvākyasaṁpannaḥ kāryasaṁpatkaraṁ vacaḥ

yo me hiṁsitavāṁstātaṁ takṣakaḥ sa durātmavān

And that accomplished speaker spoke on accomplishment of his great task. He said: I must avenge on that wretch Takṣaka!

pratikuryāṁ tathā tasya tadbhavanto bruvantu me

api tatkarma viditaṁ bhavatāṁ yena pannagam

takṣakaṁ saṁpratīpte ̍gnau prakṣipeyaṁ sabāndhavam

yathā tena pitā mahyaṁ pūrvaṁ dagdho viṣāgninā

tathā ̍hamapi taṁ pāpaṁ dagdhumicchāmi pannagam

Tell me what I must do! Do you know any act by which I can throw TAkṣaka with all his friends and relatives in the blazing fire? I want to burn the wretch of the sname as he burnt my father with his poison!

ṛtvija ūcuḥ

asti rājanmahatsatraṁ tvadarthaṁ devanirmitam

sarpasatramitikhyātaṁ purāṇe paripaṭhyate

Ṛtvijas said: O king! There is a sacrifice advised by celestials for you! It is known as snake sacrifice and is spoken of in the Purāṇas.

āhartā tasya satrasya tvannānyo ̍sti narādhipa

iti paurāṇikāḥ prāhurasmākaṁ cāsti sa ṛtuḥ

O king! You alone can accomplish it and no one else! Men, learned in Purāṇas, have told us that there is such a sacrifice.

sautiruvāca

evamuktaḥ sa rājarṣirmene dagdhaṁ takṣakam

hutāśanamukhe dīpte praviṣṭamiti sattama

Sauti said: O excellent one! Thus addressed, king thought Takṣaka already thrown into the blazing fire and burnt to ashes.

tato ̍bravīnmantravidastānrājā brāhmaṇāṁstadā

āhariṣyāmi tatsatraṁ saṁbhārāḥ saṁbhriyantu me

King then told these Brāhmaṇas learned in Mantras: I shall perform that sacrifice! Tell me things that are necessary.

tataste ṛtvijastasya śāstrato dvijasattama

taṁ deśaṁ māpayāmāsuryaryajñāyatanakāraṇāt

O best of Brāhmaṇas! Thereupon his wise Ṛtvijas, lealrned in Śāstras, measured, according ot ordinanves, a piece of land for sacrificial platform.

yathāvadvedavidvāṁsaḥ sarve buddheḥ paraṁgatāḥ
ṛddhyā paramayā yuktamiṣṭaṁ dvijagaṇairyutam
prabhūtadhanadhānyāḍhyamṛtvigbhiḥ suniṣevitam
nirmāya cāpi vidhivadyajñāyatanamīpsitam
rājānaṁ dīkṣayāmāsuḥ sarpasaptaye tadā
idaṁ cāsītttra pūrvaṁ sarpasatre bhavuṣyati

It was graced by the presence of holy Brāhmaṇas, It was decked with much valuable wealth, it was full of wealth and paddy. On this sacrificial platform they according to rites installed the king in the sanake sacrifice. But before commencement of the sacrifice happened,

nimittaṁ mahadutpannaṁ yajñavighnakaraṁ tadā
yajñasyāyatane tasminkriyamāṇe vaco ̍bravīt
sthapatirbuddhisaṁpanno vāstuvidyāviśāradaḥ
ityabravītsūtradhāraḥ sūtaḥ paurāṇikastadā

An incident which foreboded a hindrance to  it. For when sacrificial platform was being built, a man, of Suta caste, well acquainted with Purāṇas and learned in the art of masonary and of laying foundations, said:

yasmindeśe ca kāle ca māpaneyaṁ pravartitā
brāhmaṇaṁ kāraṇaṁ kṛtvā nāyaṁ saṁsthāsyate kratuḥ

Land in which the platform was made and the time when it was measured, indicate that this sacrifice will not be completed. Brāhmaṇa will be its cause.

etacchrutvā tu rājā ̍sau prāgdīkṣākālamabravīt
kṣattāraṁ na hi me kaścidajñātaḥ praviśediti

Having heard this, king, before he was installed in sacrifice, ordered the gate keepers saying: None must be allowed to enter her without my permission.
